How to record a citation
You need nothing at all to read. The text is CC0, lives on IPFS, and opens from a link. Setup is only needed to write "I cited this version" onto the chain, and for that you need one thing: gas on a test network.
Three words first
People read this as "you need a token". That is not quite right.
- ETH
- The base currency of Ethereum. It is not a token. Tokens are issued by a contract; ETH has no contract — the chain itself tracks balances. Here you use ETH on Sepolia, a test network, which cannot be exchanged for money.
- datatoken
- The token Ocean Protocol uses. You do not supply it. Pressing "Record" mints exactly one inside that transaction and burns it in the same one. So nobody can hold it and nobody can trade it. Supply is always zero.
- Gas
- The fee for having the network execute a write. Paid in ETH by whoever writes. Reading costs nothing.
Steps
Install a wallet
A browser extension such as MetaMask. If you already have one, use it.
Switch to Sepolia
This catalogue uses only Sepolia, a test network. Nothing is on a production chain. If the top right does not say Sepolia, press the wallet button and it will ask to switch.
The chainId is 11155111.
Get some test ETH
Sepolia ETH comes free from a faucet. It cannot be exchanged for money, so no real value moves. One record costs very little — 0.01 ETH covers dozens. Any of these will do.
Press "Record" on a volume page
Your wallet asks you to sign. Approving leaves an on-chain record that you cited this version. It does not deliver the text (you can already read it). What you get is a citation nobody can erase.
Where people get stuck
It says I do not have enough gas
The faucet ETH has not arrived yet, or it arrived on a different network. Check that your wallet shows Sepolia and that the balance is not zero.
It says to switch to Sepolia
You are on a production network. Press the button at the top right and it will ask to switch. If declined, choose Sepolia manually in your wallet.
It says no wallet found
The extension is not installed, or is disabled for this tab. Reload the page after installing.
Do I need to record anything at all?
No. Not for reading. It matters when you want a footnote that pins down which version you saw, so that later updates cannot blur it.
To repeat: reading needs no setup. Open the text straight from the catalogue.
